3 Things You Didn’t Know About Port Jefferson: Fall Edition

The charm of Port Jefferson lasts year round with plenty of exciting things happening in the Village during the fall.

Fresh Produce A Plenty
The weather may be getting a little cooler, but there are still many ways to enjoy fresh, local produce in Port Jefferson during the fall. The farmer’s market at Mayor Jeanne Garant Harborfront Park continues to run every Sunday through the first weekend in December. You can bring your family and friends to see what the local farms are growing and stock up on the freshest produce around. Produce from the fall harvests makes the best apple pies and the creamiest butternut squash soup!

Outdoor Activities
In a village as beautiful as Port Jefferson, outdoor activities are a staple of life with plenty to do in all seasons.

There are beautiful views around the harbor to see the fall foliage, but if you want to more immersed in nature, there are plenty of easy walking trails nearby. One of the closest trails is the Setauket -Port Jefferson Station Greenway trail. This 3.4-mile trail takes you through an old growth forest, farmland, meadows, business districts, the Stony Brook University campus, and county parks.

The Rinx sponsors outdoor ice-skating on the harbor beginning November 24th.

If there’s one outdoor event you can’t miss, it’s the 23rd Annual Charles Dickens Festival beginning on December 1st. The Village of Port Jefferson magically transforms into the Dickensian era. During the two-day, award-winning festival, you can find characters like Father Christmas, Scrooge, and chimney sweeps galore roaming the streets. Fall is almost here

The first days of school have passed, and the weather is changing rapidly.  As we begin to usher in the fall season, we put together a few ways to help you get ready for one of the most beautiful times of the year.

Decorate Your Home

There are a few simple swaps you can make to give your home a fall feel without a major redecorating:

Add flowers. Swapping summer flowers for picks like sunflowers, chrysanthemum and pansies keep the room bright while adding fall flare.

Make a wreath. Wreaths aren’t just for Christmas.  Making a wreath from leaves, pine cones, and other fall classics can warm up any door or entrance. There are plenty of DIY sites for you to get inspired.

Incorporate candles. Tall candles can make your space warm and inviting. Surround the candles in lanterns or on decorative trays filled with coffee beans, fall leaves, acorns, or candy corn to give it an autumn feel.

Your Lifestyle

Now that the summer is coming to an end, you’ll need to find new ways to enjoy your leisure time and entertain family and friends. Shipyard’s luxurious amenities let you continue to live your ideal life, even after the warm weather fades.

Trade in that wine glass for a coffee mug on the rooftop deck that’s open throughout the season.  Fall is the perfect weather for resident grill masters to stay cool as they barbeque. Cap your evening off roasting smores with friends around a firepit in true fall fashion.

If you prefer to spend the cooler fall nights indoors, the common spaces throughout the property can accommodate your friends and family for entertaining. The fireplace is a great place to host a game night and gather people together to relax and have fun.

You can also stay on top of your fitness goals no matter the weather conditions.  The cooler weather means you’ll just have to transition your workout routine indoors. Have your morning run in the fitness studio.

Your Community Events

Many exciting community events take place in the fall in Port Jefferson.

You can stock up on fresh produce at the Village’s Fall Farmer’s Market every Sunday through December 2nd.

Bring chairs and blankets and watch dragon boats compete, Saturday, September 15th, in the 4th Annual Dragon Boat Festival at the Major Jeanne Garant Harborfront Park and the Port Jefferson Inner Harbor.

Rent vs. buy: What works best for you.

Pros and Cons of Leasing or Buying

Leasing or buying is often not a financial question but a question of what stage of life are you in. Is this your first time leaving the nest or are you looking to downsize from a house into an apartment, or vice versa? When deciding to lease an apartment or purchase a home, there are advantages and disadvantages to evaluate. To help with this process, we list several points to consider when taking this leap and making that big decision:

Pros of Leasing:

  • Substantial stability allows you to be free of any ownership responsibilities: building maintenance, upgrades, repairs, structural issues, etc. As a renter, you don’t have the responsibility or burden of maintenance or repair costs – all you must do is simply communicate with the landlord, apartment complex superintendent, or property manager and inform them of the issue.
  • A renter’s housing costs are monthly fixed expenditures without the surprise maintenance costs associated with homeownership. You know, in advance, exactly what your monthly expense will be.
  • Renters are insulated from the fluctuations of the housing market.
  • Access to unique apartment amenities may include but are not limited to, the following: resident clubrooms, rooftop decks, wine lockers, dog washing stations, and fitness centers.
  • Leasing offers you freedom and flexibility to relocate and move elsewhere. Relocating for work (or pleasure) is less costly and less time-consuming in a rental situation.

Cons of Leasing

  •  Renting an apartment does not build equity.
  • Renting typically affords less privacy than owning a single-family home.

Pros of Buying

  • After paying down principal, the homeowner can build a substantial amount of equity if the housing market appreciates. A sharp rise in local property values could mean a sizeable profit when you decide to sell your home in the future.
  • There are a handful of tax benefits that are exclusive to homeowners. However, new tax policy changes may have an adverse impact on these benefits, especially in high tax areas.
  • Single-family homes often allow for more privacy than multi-family arrangements.
  • Storage options in a single-family home are usually more abundant than in an apartment.

Cons of Buying

  • There is often more limited flexibility if you decide that you would like to relocate. It often takes time to sell a home at your desired price, to the right buyer. If you need to sell your home quickly, you may be forced to accept a lower offer from a buyer and take a loss on your investment.
  • There is a potential for financial loss. Although homeownership allows you to build equity over time, that doesn’t mean that equity automatically equates to profit. If home values in your area remain the same or decrease while you own it, your investment will be at risk when you choose to sell.
  • It’s your financial responsibility to maintain and repair your home when necessary.
